Project details:

The construction of the Birsfelden retirement centre was divided into 3 stages. Firstly, the new building part 1 was constructed on the existing old building to provide the residents with a new home after completion. Then, in the second stage, the old building was demolished to make room for the new building part 2 as the third stage. Such interlinked construction processes require a carefully thought-out concept in order to recognise supply bottlenecks at an early stage and ensure accessibility. Despite the construction stages, the installations and systems such as security + distribution, safety lighting, telephony, fire protection, nurse call, etc. from both parts of the new building must ultimately form a single unit. Another focus was on the lighting design in order to take into account the changed visual characteristics of older people.

In these projects, particular attention is paid to the needs of patients, the elderly and staff. Aspects such as age-appropriateness and accessibility must be taken into account, as must facilities for care and treatment.
